Output at Collahuasi Copper Mine Continues Despite Strike Action

The strike of the union workers may have entered its 10^th day but the copper output at the Collahuasi Mine remains constant. The mine located in northern Chile is owned by Anglo American and Xstrata. It is the fourth largest copper mine in the world.

There has been no disruption of copper production as per the company spokeswoman Bernardita Fernandez at the mine located 13,100 feet above sea level in the Andes. The prices of copper ore had shot up in anticipation of a disrupted supply last week to a record high.

The shipments from Collahuasi mine account for more than 3% of the global annual production of the metal. The union workers have been haggling for higher wage rates and refused an offer made by the management on November 5, 2010. After which the union workers went on strike,

Currently the mine is functioning with non union employees and contracted workers. Analysts feel that since the mine had time to prepare of the impending strike it was not feeling the impact right away. However the impact would become more evident if the strike went on for a prolonged duration.
