Pele Mountain Resources Inc. ("Pele") today announced its participation in a panel discussion on sustainable development, held at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario on the evening of July 2.
The panel included representatives of local First Nations, municipalities, industry, and academia who responded to questions from moderator Stan Wesley about sustainable development in the region. The forum was attended by local residents, government officials, and members of the press. It was organized by Serpent River First Nation.
Chief Isadore Day, Wiindawtegowinini of Serpent River First Nation stated, "Our vision is to move forward together in the Territory and to ensure that economic development advances in a way that safeguards the environment and delivers benefits that can support a good life for our people. Our Treaty with the crown remains sacred. It is as important to the future of sustainable development in the region as it was when our people entered into it. The Regional Round Table has begun the vital process of establishing the guiding principal of "Kiina Naakiidaa", which in the Ojibwa language means "moving forward together"."
Rick Hamilton, Mayor of the City of Elliot Lake stated, "We are pleased to advocate for sustainable development, including environmentally responsible mining operations to produce rare earths and uranium, which can deliver long-term benefits to our City and to the Region. We are also pleased to engage in productive public dialogue with regional leaders and stakeholders as we work together to achieve this objective."
Al Shefsky, President of Pele stated, "We are committed to sustainable development as we lead the next generation of rare earth and uranium development in Elliot Lake, the only mining camp in Canada that historically achieved commercial production of critical rare earths. It was a privilege to represent the mining development industry in this valuable discussion and we thank Serpent River First Nation for inviting our participation."
