Collahuasi Copper Mine Running Smoothly Despite Strike Action

The Collahuasi copper mine is said to be running normally even as the workforce strike enters a fourth day as per the joint owners Anglo American and Xstrata.

The fourth largest copper mine in the world has had trouble with union workers and so far has been unable to reach a deal.

Bernardita Fernandez a spokeswoman for Collahuasi said that operations are running smoothly. Workers who were striking focused on a school in Iquique yesterday. This is a coastal town located about 185 km away from the mine.

Trucks with men and material were able to travel with ease and without restriction from the mine site to the company’s port yesterday. The company said that the copper output and shipments were steady. The mine produces 3.3% of the annual copper production in the world.

However the union leaders say that only parts of the mine are in operation. They also said that some problems related to labour were already affecting the mine.

There are no signs of the talks between management and union resuming at the copper mine.
