Queensland Fast Tracks Apprenticeships and Migration to Cope with Mining Demands

Mining apprenticeships are being fast tracked in Queensland to try and meet shortfalls that the mining industry is currently facing. As per official estimates a shortfall of about 36,000 tradespersons will be found in the mining sector by 2015.

New initiatives for handling the shortfall have seen the government allow temporary migrants to come in from overseas to fill the gap. Skills and Jobs Minister Chris Evans said that the Department of immigration will be given a deadline of five days to issue visas to temporary migrant workers who have been chosen to come and work on any of the mega projects in the state.

Another initiative is to fast track the training of a number of potential mine workers so that they are able to step in to fill in shortages being faced by the mining industry. Mining companies will be able to ask for money grants from the newly set up $ 200 million worth Critical Skills Investment Fund.

The scheme that is most in the spotlight has been designed by the East Coast Apprenticeships company will fast track 40 groups of 25 apprenticeships that will be led into jobs at the end of the training period. The Minister said that the new apprenticeships would not compromise training standards because prior experience would be carefully considered.
