Atlas Copco Announces BenchREMOTE Remote Operator Station for Safety and Efficiency

Atlas Copco has introduced a unique remote operator station that enables operators to do their job from a safe distance, and handle up to three rigs in parallel.

The risk of working close to unstable and hazardous benches, while still having to drill close to the wall, is a well-known problem for drillers around the world. Despite safety regulations, accidents with falling rocks still occur.

The BenchREMOTE remote operator station for SmartROC D65 surface drill rigs enables operators to do their job from a safe distance and can remotely handle up to three rigs in parallel.

Atlas Copco’s remote operator station BenchREMOTE can be used up to 100 meters from the drilling area and up to 30 meters above the rig, on condition that the operator has a direct line of sight with the drill rig doing the work. This enables operators to do their job from a safe distance.

And it is not only a question of safety. Mattias Hjerpe, Product Manager, says:

“The BenchREMOTE can handle up to three SmartROC D65 rigs in parallel. This multiplies the operator efficiency and was made possible by the full drill cycle automation.”

Up to ten rigs can be pre-programmed in the operator station, which facilitates the planning process. The BenchREMOTE operator station can be installed in a vehicle, trailer or container and all controls and screens are the same as in the real cabin on the rig.

Communication, including that related to machine control and safety functions, takes place over a closed WiFi network. This makes BenchREMOTE totally independent of local network infrastructure. If the network is lost due to distance to the drill rig, it will shut down for safety reasons.

All SmartROC D65 drill rigs can be upgraded for BenchREMOTE operation.
