Mining projects could soon be in deep trouble, with the industry encountering an extreme scarcity of workers as younger ‘greener’ generations are discouraged by the poor environmental status of the mining industry.
According to Techforce Personnel, a labor hire company, the mining sector is dealing with its worst skills predicament due to Gen Z ignoring the sector due to environmental apprehensions.
In a new report published by the Australian Resources and Energy Employer Association (AREE), the mining sector, over the next five years, would require 24,000 new workers to sustain projects across Australia. Projects in jeopardy include gold, coal, and essential minerals.
This is threatening the continuity of existing operations, resulting in temporary or permanent production downgrades and driving other workforce issues, including historic levels of staff turnover.

Currently, the association is combating staff scarcity, making it challenging to run existing operations at their maximum productivity level. Techforce states that one of the core barriers in hiring new staff is attracting young people who are put off by the controversial environmental status of the mining sector.
Since environmental sustainability has become a worldwide focus, the mining sector has been pushed to rebrand, but Techforce states the sector is determined to reorganize itself and enhance its social and environmental performance.
Programs are being introduced to attract young talent and boost innovation and pioneering thinking in the pivoting industry. To attract prospective candidates, the Perth labor hire company says the mining sector has to partner with unions, governments, and education organizations.
