How to Identify Neyite

Neyite can be identified in the field by its color variations, such as lead-gray, silver-gray, gray-blue, and yellow-blue. Its opaque form has no cleavage. This mineral has a metallic lustre with gray streak. The fracture on this mineral is brittle-conchoidal.

The density of neyite is 7.02 g/cm3, with a hardness of 2.5 – approximate to finger nail.

Global Distribution

Neyite is distributed in the following places:

  • Canada - Patsy Creek, Kitsault, near Alice Arm, British Columbia
  • USA - Johnny Lyon Hills, north of Benson, Cochise Co. Arizona; Alaska mine, Poughkeepsie Gulch, San Juan Co. Colorado; Whiskey Canyon prospect, Lewis district, Lander Co. Nevada
  • Zimbabwe  - Golconda prospect, Chishawasha, near Harare
  • Portugal - Vale das Gatas tungsten mine, near Vila Real
  • Austria - Felbertal tungsten mine, Salzburg

Occurrence of Neyite and Useful Mineral Association

Neyite occurs in the late-forming, cross-cutting hydrothermal quartz veins in a quartz-molybdenite stockwork. It also occurs in the mesozonal synmetamorphic quartz veins.

It is often associated with minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, aikinite, galena, sphalerite, cosalite, tetrahedrite, molybdenite, gold, nuffieldite, chalcopyrite, nordstromite, and quartz.
