India Approves Coal Mining at Reliance Power's Jharkhand Project

Reliance Power has received the go ahead from the Indian government for its project in the state of Jharkhand. The proposed Rs. 20,000 crore project has been granted initial clearances for coal mining.

The Anil Ambani group’s company has received a notification from the Union Coal Ministry to go ahead with the Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. The land acquisition process for developing the mines is next after the initial environmental clearances have been received.

The project hopes to reach an annual coal production of 40 million tonnes for a mine life period of 30 years. The area is expected to have coal reserves to the tune of 1.2 billion tonnes. The mine area is also located merely 30 km from the existing Indian Railway lines which will help in the transportation of the coal.

The notification from the central Coal Ministry said that the company will utilise 16 million tonnes per year of coal exclusively for Tilaiya UMPP and the balance 24 million tonnes will be utilised/disposed off as per the conditions laid down in the allocation letter.
