Xstrata Board Approves Hunter Valley Coal Expansion
The $1.4 billion Hunter Valley coal expansion planned by Xstrata has been approved by the company board of directors. The expansion of operations in that area will create about 800 new jobs subject to Xstrata getting all necessary approvals from the state and federal government.
The Ravensworth North mine development is expected to begin early in 2011 as per Xstrata but it is pending approval from the New South Wales Department of Planning and for the environmental approval from the Australian Government.
The new project is expected to have a 26 year mine life. Located in Upper Hunter Valley it will produce 8 million tonnes of coal per year. The product will be for export thermal and semi soft coking coal. The Ravensworth North mine will come within the Cumnock Coal and Ravensworth complex.
250 jobs will be created in the mine construction phase and 550 jobs are likely to be fulfilled during mining operations. The first production of coal is expected in July 2012. Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union northern district president Peter Jordan said the union supported the proposed expansion of the Xstrata operations.
