Asciano Wants Queensland Coal Rail Regulated by ACCC
Asciano Group (AIO), a transport infrastructure business, with a focus on ports and rail, is asking for a declaration so that the Queensland coal rail network is regulated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) after the public float of Queensland's coal and bulk freight network.
This comes in response to the Queensland government's announcement to apply to the National Competition Council (NCC) to keep regulation of rail access in the hands of the Queensland Competition Authority. The NCC has also backed the state in a draft it released and rejected Asciano's application.
The Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser has welcomed the draft decision taken by the NCC. Mr Fraser said that competition was a key feature of the network. It has been welcomed and encouraged by the government and that is precisely why Pacific National trains are on the tracks today.
Asciano Group is the parent company of the rail operator Pacific National. It has said that it will push the case until a final decision is taken later this year.
Asciano's portfolio includes Pacific National and Patrick's.
