Bob Hawke Supports Expanding Uranium Exports to India

The former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke said that it was time to accept that uranium exports to India were a good idea. The Labor politician had brokered a deal in 1984 that allowed uranium mining and exports from three mines on the condition that no more were opened.

The fourth uranium mine was opened under Kevin Rudd when the ALP finally relaxed its long standing policy. That is how the mine in the Four Mile project came about. The ex-prime minister is obviously still passionate about the issue as he supports the Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson in its push for expanded uranium exports to India.

The Australian Worker Union wants to reopen the debate of supplying India uranium at the annual national conference. Bob Hawke said that the party should not get hung up on prejudices of the past and accept the modern reality of uranium as a source of clean fuel.

He said that there had been an incapacity within Australia to discuss the issue of uranium. He said that you have to think about these issues in terms of modern reality. Adding that the fact was that we wanted as clean an environment as possible and generation of electricity by nuclear power stations is an increasingly positive feature of that.
