Ken Henry Airs Frustration Over RSPT Debate
The Australian Treasury Secretary Ken Henry is canvassing for support to the prospective resources super profits tax or RSPT. He made aired his frustrations over the heated debate surrounding the proposed 40% tax on mining in a statement addressing a conference in Sydney.
He felt that is was an incredibly frustrating experience for people advising governments of both stripes that economists seemed loathed to come to a consensus position on anything.
The statement is being seen as a response to the latest report released by Xstrata mining group and West Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy.
According to the report commissioned from Ernst & Young the proposed tax would harm Australia. In Mr. Henry’s opinion all such statements do is cause enormous damage to the prospects of sensible reform.
He felt that convincing a wary public and a tougher and cynical media makes it virtually impossible in Australia to get political consensus on any tax proposal other than a straightforward cut.
