Some ex-coal miners are helping the Snibston Discover Museum in Coalville recreate a coal face and pit pony stable as part of its popular colliery tour.

South Africa may be scaring its mining community with talks of the nationalization of mines but global diamond mining and trading giant De Beers is not bothered. The South African unit of the world’s largest diamond producing company is confident that a 10 billion Rand mine expansion project will be approved by the government.

Goldcorp Inc. sold its 10.1 % stake in Osisko Mining Corp for $13.75 a share amounting to a total of $530 million in cash. The stock of the company went up by 1% after the announcement.
Colombia is riding high on the new set of international investments in its gold bullion resources with a number of Canadian junior miners entering the field. In fact gold is generating more revenue for the country than its signature cash crop of coffee.

Rio Tinto is to invest $1.2 billion to expand mining operations in Australia and Canada. The mining giant intends to spend $933 million on the Marandoo iron ore mine in Australia to prolong its life by another 16 years till 2030. Another $277 million will be invested in the Iron Ore Company of Canada to raise concentrate production capacity by 40% to 26 million tonnes annually.
The Brazilian Mining Industry is going to see legal changes to the old 1968 mining code. The changes would be along the lines of the oil legislation which was passed over the last 15 years taking Brazil from being an importer of oil to a net exporter of petroleum products. The plan is being named the National Mining Plan 2030.
