Terrorist Attack at NMDC Iron Ore Facility in India
Chhattisgarh's battle with the Maoists is now affecting its mines. The Indian State of Chhattisgarh saw almost 40 armed Maoists open fire at an NMDC mining facility in Dantewada district. NMDC Ltd is India's largest iron ore miner. The attack took place at the Bacheli mining facility.
The Maoists set a vehicle ablze at Akash Nagar on a hilltop as the Central Industrial Security Force or CISF personnel fired in retaliation. No casualty of injury was reported at the mines as per a local police officer on the spot.
The second shift miners were stuck inside the mine and the third shift miner could not get in as they waited for the firing to stop. The attack began at about 9.15 pm.
In the last attack that the Maoists had carried out in February 2006 at a depot in Hiroli they had stolen 20 tonnes of mining explosives. Maoists have been repeatedly targeting NMDC mines in recent years. Even blowing up a pipeline that supplied iron ore slurry in an Iron Ore plant in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh earlier this year.
