Costa Rica Cancels Gold Mine Concession
In Costa Rico a court has annulled the government granted mining concessions that Industrias Infinito, S.A. had won. The company is a Costa Rican subsidiary of Infinito Gold, a Calgary, Canada-based mining exploration and development company.
The decision comes after environmental activities campaigned that the controversial open pit gold mine at Las Crucitas in the Northern Zone near the Nicaraguan border would cause great environmental damage. As per the court the environmental studies that were required to grant the mining concession were incomplete and so the mining contract was illegal.
The environmental group that filed the appeal was The Wild Flora and Fauna Preservation Association. They also proved during the court proceedings that the existence of the mine was hurting the local environment.
The court has also asked for a criminal case against former president Oscar Arias, former environment minister Roberto Dobles and six others over the alleged irregularities in permits issued to Industrias Infinito.
