Retrenchments Announced at Beaconsfield Gold Mine
The restructuring of the Beaconsfield gold mine in Tasmania has led to the retrenchment of 85 underground mine workers. The restructuring of the mine is part of the effort to put it back on a profitable footing. Of the miners who have lost their jobs around 40 will be rehired by the contract mining group Webb Contractors.
The mining group is going to undertake all the mining operations at the mine now. The Webb Contractors have been involved with the development activities of the mine for many years. Its owner Nigel Webb is part of the investor syndicate that has helped pull the owners of the mine through a cash crisis.
The owners of the mine are BCD Resources. The mine manager Paul Richardson said that the changes being implemented were necessary for the mine to become profitable. He said that decision had been an extremely difficult one but their aim was to ensure that the mine can continue to operate. That way it would be possible to protect as many jobs as possible in the future.
A net loss of 45 jobs is expected. The workers who will be made redundant are to get full entitlements.
