Karnataka State Plan to Ban Iron Ore Exports Knocked Back
The Karnataka state government's desperate plea to the central government in India to ban the export of iron ore met with sensible resistance to the impractical idea.
The state of Karnataka has been battling illegal mining of iron ore and had requested a ban on iron ore exports to stem the illegal activities. Chief Minister Yeddyurappa had asked for this action to help clamp down on illegal mining.
However any such move will result in massive unemployment, revenue loss and social tensions as per the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma. He also said that Indian iron ore mines produced close to 230 million tonnes annually and the domestic consumption was not more than 90 million tonnes.
This left the country with a surplus of about 140 million tonnes annually and it was not possible to store this without risking environmental hazards. He also added that banning iron ore exports was not the solution to check the illegal mining in the state. He said that those engaged in legal mining would be the ones who got punished if the ban was imposed.
