Solomon Islands Gold Ridge Mine Back After 11 Years Idle
The Gold Ridge Mining Limited Company held a ceremony on Tuesday to mark the one year anniversary of reaching reconciliation with the landowners and the restart of work at the Solomon Islands gold ridge mine.
The mine is scheduled to reach full commercial level of production by June 2011. It had remained closed for more than a decade due to ethnic conflict.
Operated by Allied Gold, the gold mine on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands poured its first gold two weeks ago. The ceremony was marked by attendance of local politicians and community leaders besides the landowners.
The Executive Chairman, Mark Caruso said that at a similar ceremony a year ago Allied Gold had undertaken to rebuild and refurbish the Gold Ridge mine. It had cost $150 million and had been achieved before schedule and on budget with no fatalities or any serious injury to any employees.
The mine had been acquired by Allied Gold from the takeover of the Canadian listed company Australian Solomon Gold in 2009-10. The Gold Ridge mine is to account for one fourth of the gross national product of Solomon Islands. The company is to employ about 600 people in mining and operational roles of which 85% will be locals. The Allied Gold company also operate the Simberi gold mine in Papua New Guinea.
