South Heart Coal LLC has filed their application to build the 4,600-acre project new coal mine in southwestern North Dakota. They are hoping to supply lignite to a $2.2 billion electric power plant that a separate company, South Heart Energy Development LLC, plans to build nearby. The powerplant will produce 175 megawatts of electricity.

U.S. Energy Corp has won approval for a revised plan which will allow it to build a mine tunnel at Mount Emmons. The plan was being strongly protested by conservationists due to the mine's proximity to the ski town of Crested Butte.

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., a U.S. based international mining giant, on Tuesday made an offer of $4.9 billion for Thompson Iron Mines. The takeover bid raised the shares in the Montreal based Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines by 30%.
A couple of Upper Hunter mine modifications have been approved by the Department of Planning. The first one, the Ashton mine is located near Singleton. The proposed layout of the mine has been changed to include diversions in two places that will stop mining under Bowman's Creek.
