A nephew of the South African president owns that Aurora Empowerment Systems firm. The firm is a black affirmative action investment company which has limited mining exposure.

Environmental concerns over seabed mining have risen again, this time at the seabed exploration of Groote Eylandt by the mining firm Groote Resources. The mining company has received an exploration licence to look for manganese in the area between the island and the mainland in the Gulf of Carpentaria in northeastern Australia.

The African National Congress (ANC) is looking at the possibility of nationalizing the South African mining industry with the help of two independently appointed researchers. The irony of this decision is that they want mining companies to help fund the research.

Nyrstar will take over Farallon Mining in a friendly deal for around $380 million. The European company has offered 80 cents per share for Farallon Mining after close of markets on Monday. The shares last traded at 78 cents on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The machinery and engine manufacturer Caterpillar has placed a $7.6 billion takeover bid for another equipment maker, Bucyrus. Currently Caterpillar produces heavy duty trucks and excavators. If the deal with Bucyrus goes through it will add giant electrical shovels and other mining equipment to its catalogue.
