The rescue of 33 miners trapped in an underground mine in Chile is now going to hit the big screen. Producer Mike Medavoy maker of the Black Swan and his company Phoenix Pictures have come to an agreement with the miners to turn their ordeal into a motion picture.

Quadra FNX Mining said that there has been a 20% increase in the second quarter production for 2011. The combined payable production included 55 million pounds of copper, 27 thousand ounces of total precious metals and 2 million pounds of nickel.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has won a landmark case against Rio Tinto in Western Australia. The full bench of the Federal Court has ruled that the non-union collective agreements that Rio Tinto had with its mine workers in the Pilbara region were invalid.
Victory Energy and its partner Aurora Energy have proclaimed that their Nassau #1 well in Jones County has attained a target depth of 5,325 ft and is currently entering the completion phase.

The New South Wales Minerals Council said that the health and safety of miners could be in jeopardy without harmonized Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations. The chief executive of the NSW Minerals Council, Nikki Williams made the statement at the largest OHS conference which hosted over 500 people.

In Queensland a Wagyû cattle breeding farm is to be sold to Xstrata. The Swiss mining giant is buying the 17,474 hectare pastoral farm from the Australian Agricultural Company. The deal has been struck for $21.6 million and the farm is to be sold minus the cattle and machinery.

Thor Mining has acknowledged two drilling targets in the Dundas Gold Project in Western Australia. The project is located within the Albany-Fraser province in that extends along the southern and southwestern margin of the Yilgarn Craton.

Lundin Mining announced on Thursday that it was going to produce less zinc and copper than its 2011 guidance. This is mainly due to unpredictable mining rates in the Portugal based Neves Corvo mine as per the company.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized the guidelines for surface mining and they include a new standard for judging the impact of mining operations on regional water quality. The surface mining guidelines have caused quite a controversy in the Appalachian coal county that includes Eastern Kentucky.
