Australian gold production may be beating records but it is still second to the Chinese. Despite a 17% increase in 2010 compared to the 2009 gold production in Australia, China was still reported as the number one producer of gold in the world.

The former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke said that it was time to accept that uranium exports to India were a good idea. The Labor politician had brokered a deal in 1984 that allowed uranium mining and exports from three mines on the condition that no more were opened.

Moly Mines has resumed iron ore shipments from Spinifex Ridge after the bad weather had forced all operations to stop. It said that a ship with 64,472 wet metric tonnes of iron ore with a 59% iron grading has set sail for China.
The South African government has launched a state owned mining company. President Jacob Zuma launched the African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation or AEMFRC with the hope that it would bring all state mining interests into its remit.

Ludin Mining's proposed merger with Inmet Mining Corp may now face a new obstacle - a hostile takeover bid from Equinox Minerals. The Vancouver based company Ludin Mining said on Sunday that Equinox Minerals intends to make an unsolicited takeover bid for the company before Monday markets resume.
