Open Pit Iron Ore Mine Planned for North Wisconsin

Mining company Gogebic Taconite wants to develop an open pit mine for iron ore in north Wisconsin. The project would cost about $1 billion and the company has bought an option to lease the mineral rights on 22,000 acres in Ashland and Iron counties.

The remaining permits to start the mine are expected to come through in the next 5 to 7 years. The state Department of Natural Resources has said that if all permits come through this would be the first in the state after the Flambeau copper mine. The copper mine located near Ladysmith was operational from 1991 to 1997.

The mining coordinator of the Department of Natural Resources, Philip Fauble said that since the last shipment of ore was concluded from the Flambeau copper mine the state has seen no mining activity. While Exxon Minerals had tried to mine iron ore in Crandon in 2003 it had to abandon its plan in face of public opposition.

A spokesman for Gogebic Taconite, Matthew Fifield said that the mine in the Penokee Range would create hundreds of jobs.
