Strike Averted at Codelco Copper Mine
Codleco’s No 3 copper mine unionized workers have accepted a new wage offer made to them on Wednesday. This averted a possible strike at the Radomiro Tmoic mine of Codelco, after the 20 day walkout at the nearby giant Collahuasi copper mine had already got the world concerned about Chile’s copper ore supply.
The union leader, Erwin Mascayano said that the workers voted 538 in favour of the new wage as opposed to 124 against in a ballot. He was speaking on a phone interview from the mine which is located about 20 km away from Codelco’s Chuquicamata mine in the Atacama Desert.
The management at Codelco had offered a 17% pay rise as well as bonuses of 15.7 million pesos including 3 million pesos in low interest loans as per Erwin Mascayano. He said that they were happy with this offer.
In Chile the copper mine workers are demanding a greater share of the rising company profits which are being fuelled by the current record market prices for copper ore. Copper prices in New York rebounded from the biggest two- day slide since June on speculation that supplies may tighten as the Collahuasi strike continues.
