Botswana's Jwaneng Diamond Mine Life Extended
Jwaneng, the largest diamond mine in Botswana just got an increase to its lifespan. The President of Botswana Ian Khama announced on Friday that the $3.63 billion dollar project would extend the lifespan of the mine to 2024. It was scheduled to end in 2017 before this planned expansion.
The plan has been named Cut 8 and is an initiative of Debswana, the state mining company jointly owned along with De Beers. The company is responsible for all diamond mining that occurs in the country. Botswana is responsible for 22% of the world’s supply of diamonds.
The expansion will add 1,700 jobs to the recession economy. The plan will include deployment of new drilling technology at the Jwaneng mine. The president Mr Khama said that the project would showcase Botswana’s economic capacity and potential to undertake a project of this size.
The extension project hopes to mine 658 million metric tons of waste material to allow for mining underground in the future as per Balisi Bonyongo the general manager at Jwaneng.
