China and Chile Ink New Mining and Banking Deals
China and Chile have signed agreements for mining, telecommunication and banking deals during the visit of Vice President Xi Jinping to Chile this week. Xi is expected to be the next President once current Chinese President Hu Jintao finishes his term in 2013.
The delegation that Xi Jinping led has signed a strategic cooperation agreement between Chile’s state owned Codelco and China Minmetals Corp. China is the top purchaser of copper from Chile. The signing ceremony was hosted by the Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
The two state owned banks Banco Estado of Chile and China Development Bank also signed financial cooperation and development funding accords. Cooperation in the fields will only help both nations meet their economic objectives with more ease.
The tour of Latin American countries by Xi and his delegates has been aimed at boosting ties with the resource rich nations in the region. As part of the Latin American tour Xi Jinping also visited Cuba and Uruguay. He is now nearing the end of the visit.
