Jordan to Mine Uranium by 2013

The Kingdom of Jordan is going to become a uranium producer by 2013 in spite of all the controversy regarding the nuclear program in the country. A feasibility study for a joint venture uranium mining project will be completed by the end of the year.

The joint venture is between the government of Jordan and the French company AREVA. They are to construct an open pit mine in the Al Hassa region in central Jordan. The area is said to have 15,000 tonnes of uranium reserves.

Khaled Toukan, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for Jordan said that the Kingdom will begin mining for uranium by 2013 in the area located near the Iraqi border as soon as a series of feasibility studies were completed.

There has been considerable opposition to the nuclear program in Jordan in the wake of the Japanese Fukushima disaster following the tsunami and earthquake. Despite the protests from environmentalists the nuclear program is going ahead as per schedule.
