Peru Re-Shuffles Cabinet

The President of Peru, Ollanta Humala has reshuffled the ministers in his government. This follows the state of emergency which was declared in some parts of the South American nation to help control widespread anti-mining protests.

He has appointed Jorge Humberto Merino as the new minister for Mines and Energy in place of Carlos Herrera. Before this Merino has worked for a government firm that promoted foreign investment in Peru. Peru’s economy is heavily dependent on foreign investment to speed up economic growth.

President Humala is also replacing the current Prime Minister Salomon Lerner with Oscar Valdes. Valdes is a former military officer just as Humala was. He is also an astute businessman who should be able to use dialogue to defuse the protests that the communities are raising over issues of pollution and scarce water supply.

In the reshuffle President Humala is expected to change 10 out of his 19 ministers. He is going to reappoint Luis Miguel Castilla the Finance Minster and Jose Luis Silva the Trade Minister. The inclusion of other military men has raised concerns that President Humala may be looking at a more strict form of governance. The swearing in ceremony for the new minister is set for late on Sunday.
