New Mining Bill to Cost Says Department of Natural Resources
A new mining bill being pushed by the Republicans in Wisconsin could end up costing the Department of Natural Resources between $550,000 and $3.8 million a year. Analysts say that the bill could lead to higher expenses and lower revenue.
The 183 page bill seeks to make many changes including placing time limits on the Department of Natural Resources to approve or deny an iron ore mine application. It will also limit the reimbursement for costs associated with the application approval process to $1.1 million to the Department of Natural Resources.
The bill is being pushed to help Gogebic Taconite’s plans for an iron ore mine in the Penokee Hills. The project is located south of Lake Superior and would provide 700 jobs in the area. The mine is expected to have a life of at least 35 years and will also produce about 2,000 ancillary jobs in the region’s service and transport businesses.
Currently company officials have suspended their plans as they wait for assurances from law makers that the Department of Natural Resources will provide them with permits in a timely manner. The Republicans see the mine as a way to deliver campaign promises to create new jobs in the region and are working to pass the bill.
