Outrage as Some Australian Miners Required to Buy Chinese Equipment

Australian mining companies are being asked to buy Chinese equipment as a pre-condition to exporting minerals. Contracts are said to specify that the companies buy specific, non-Australian manufactured equipment. This is being seen as an outrage by Australian manufacturers.

The supposed conditional contracts were brought to light by the Australian Industry Group. It said that the overseas contractors were pressurizing Australian miners to buy Chinese equipment. Australian suppliers are being locked out of some mining projects due to this. Australian miners have rejected the claim saying 80% procurement is made from Australian manufacturers.

The Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said that the government would bring a case to the World Trade Organization if the Australian suppliers were able to provide them with evidence of such conditional contracts.

Ms Gillard said that any clear evidence of this will be taken by us to the World Trade Organization because it is in breach of the rules and it is not giving Aussie manufacturers a fair go. She added that her message would be for people who have got this anecdotal evidence, that they needed to take it to the next stage. She specified that if clear evidence was available then they would certainly do everything they could to process the case internationally, because it's not fair to Aussie manufacturers.
