Controversial Canadian Mining Bill Defeated in Parliament

The Canadian Parliament has defeated a bill known as C- 300 that was introduced by John McKay of the opposition Liberal Party. The bill was introduced in February 2009.

The bill would have raised the bar on human rights and environmental standards followed by Canadian mining companies that work abroad.

Karyn Keena a project officer for the Halifax Initiative which is a non government coalition of human rights, labour and environmental groups said that even if the bill is voted down it has created an educational process in the parliament.

The mining industry had said that the bill would damage the image and reputation of Canadian companies all over the world if Ottawa implied that it had lost trust in its own mining sector by passing this bill. It would also be a major deterrent to other miners who are considering relocating to Canada.
