Drilling has begun at the Myall Creek project owned by Strategic Energy Resources on 29 January 2011. The poor weather had been the cause of delay of the drilling for some months now. Three drill holes will be dug in the week long program and the results would be in by the end of the first quarter.

Two large scale protests in Hunter Valley held last year will see almost 80 climate change activists in court. The Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminal in the Port of Newcastle was the scene of protests with people climbing onto the machinery and shutting down the coal loading facility for several hours.

The 29 miners who died in the explosion at the Pike River Coal mine in New Zealand have brought forth a number of issues. An inquest was conducted to give families of the miners death certificates and the coroner has concluded that there was probably no hope of rescuing the miners at all.
The rains in Australia and Brazil have played havoc with shipments for mining giant Vale with 600,000 tonnes of iron ore being delayed from Brazil and 500,000 tonnes of coal being delayed from Australia.
