NLMK to Develop Usinsk Coal Deposit in the Komi Republic

NLMK has won the right to develop the third mining area in the Usinsk coal deposit (Usinks-3) located in the north of the Komi Republic. NLMK was selected following a competition organized by the Subsoil Agency of the Komi Republic. The license fee is RUR900 million. The license granting the right to develop the mine will be obtained within two months.

Supreme Court of India Says Karnataka Iron Ore Ban Not Forever

The Supreme Court of India told the state government of Karnataka that it could not keep up an iron ore transportation ban forever. The ban which was imposed by the state government in an effort to stem illegal mining and export of iron ore was issued last year in July.

China Tightens Grip on Rare Earths

The Ministry of Land and Resources in China has used a mining law to gain direct control of 11 rare earth mining districts in southern China. This will allow the Chinese government greater control over production and export of rare earth minerals that are needed to produce many high tech electronics goods.

Newmont Mining Announces Increased Copper and Gold Output

For Newmont Mining the preliminary results for output of gold and copper production in 2010 are higher than in 2009. The compnay produced 5.4 million ounces of gold and 327 million pounds of copper in 2010. While the gold produced was marginally more there was a 45% hike in the production of copper when compared to 2009 figures.
