Rare earth miner Lynas Corporation officially opened its Mt Weld mine in Western Australia last week with the Premier of Western Australia Colin Barnett performing the honors. The mine is located 35 km south of Laverton and is a $100 million project.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ivanhoe Mines, Robert Friedland is extremely pleased with the progress being made at the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. The massive gold and copper mine is expected to begin production ahead of schedule and under budget as per Mr Friedland.
Mining giant Rio Tinto has a ‘bumper’ $7.6 billion first half net profit. The record profit is linked to the steadily rising prices of commodities which are being driven by demand from Asian nations.

High Desert Gold (HDG) has discovered two new excellent gold, silver and base metal mineralization areas, and also a skarn mineralization area at the San Antonio Project in Mexico.
Lundin Petroleum has discovered gas at the Cempulut-1 well in East Malaysia. This well was drilled in Block SB303 of the offshore Sabah.

Calibre Mining has declared that its business partner B2Gold has agreed a Phase II exploration and budget for the Primavera prospect, which is a gold-copper project situated 7 km to the southern part of the past Santa Rita skarn mine, producing gold and copper, in the Borosi Project, northeast Nicaragua.
American Manganese has obtained results for 14 holes from the 2011 drill program at the Artillery Peak manganese deposit. It had formerly reported results for initial 59 drill holes.

Indian iron-ore mining group Zamin Ferrous Resources was to develop the Minera Aratiri project in Uruguay, but has now downgraded the project on its international priority list from first to fourth position. The $1 billion that was slated by the company for the project is now going to be put to better use in other ongoing projects.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that it had reached a deal for the uranium contamination probe on the Navajo Nation former mining site. On Monday they said that Chevron USA Inc. was to survey the radium contaminated soil in the 31 acre Mariano Lake Mine site near Gallup, N.M., and in the surrounding 10 homes and 2 water wells.
