Mining apprenticeships are being fast tracked in Queensland to try and meet shortfalls that the mining industry is currently facing. As per official estimates a shortfall of about 36,000 tradespersons will be found in the mining sector by 2015.

Shares in Sundance Resources, an international resources company developing the Mbalam Iron Ore Project in the Republic of Cameroon and the Republic of Congo, in central west Africa, shot up by almost 7% once it reported finding high quality iron ore at Mbalam.

Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd is now mobilizing mining equipment and supplies for exploration at its Howard’s Pass property. The advanced underground exploration is part of the feasibility study at the largest known lead and zinc deposit in the world. The deposit is situated along the Yukon and Northwest Territories border and stretches for about 66 km.

What could have been the kiss of economic prosperity in southern Illinois is now being shown the metaphorical exit door by the Governor no less. Governor Pat Quinn has vetoed two bills that would allow the construction of a coal to gas plant in the state of Illinois. The two plants were proposed to be built one along the Calumet River and the other in Jefferson County in south of the state.

Riversdale Mining is still a prime target for Rio Tinto and the global mining giant is working steadily to seal the deal. It raised its offer of $16 a share to $16.50 a share last week and managed to increase the value of the Africa focused mining company to $4 billion.
In south east Nebraska Quantum Rare Earth Developments have found a sizable deposit of niobium. A new geology report has confirmed the deposit but further exploration will be required to see if it is viable for a mine to be built in the region near Elk Creek.
