Australia’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has refused permission for a coal mine in the Margaret River region of Western Australia on grounds that it would be environmentally unacceptable. As part of the detailed inquiry into the Pike River explosion that killed 29 miners in New Zealand the royal commission will also study the safety systems in place at the mine. The preliminary hearing of the inquiry into the disaster will open on April 5th, 2011 in Greymouth.
