Dubai Looks to a Cleaner Energy Future

Dubai is looking forward to new energy options such as clean coal and nuclear power. Currently the Middle East nation generates almost all of its energy by burning natural gas. It hopes to generate 20% from clean coal and another 20% from nuclear energy in the future.

The Emirate sees its power needs increasing and is being proactive about its energy needs Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said. Clean Coal technology aims to make the polluting emissions less than what traditional fossil fuels generate.

Dewa Chief Executive Officer Al Tayer said that the Supreme Council of Energy pays great attention to the important issues of the energy sector, such as power generation and water desalination according to the goal of enhancing Dubai’s production capacity to keep pace with the growing demand for power in the Emirate.

Saeed al Tayer, the vice chairman of the council and chief executive of DEWA said that diversifying the emirate's energy supply was the biggest target the council had set since it was formed last year. He felt that it was important for Dubai not to be dependent on just one energy source.
