800 Workers at Luanshya Copper Mine Zambia May Lose Jobs
At the newly re-opened China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Luanshya copper mine in Zambia more than 800 workers may lose their jobs. Mine workers will go on a recess as the management has taken a decision to temporarily close the mine for maintenance works.
The mine’s public relations manager Sydney Chileya said that out of a total of 2,528 employees 807 will proceed on recess and 1,721 will remain. They are mainly workers from the processing plant and the underground operation.
Chileya said that the 807 workers will continue to get their salaries and would not be allowed to go out of town without permission as they may be recalled as soon as the project is finished. The management expects the recess to last between a month and half to two months.
However there was panic amongst workers due to rumours of expatriates from China coming in to replace local workers after the new system was installed. There were plans to bring in some Chinese operators for machines which are currently being handled by Zambians. This is why the workers proceeding on recess are fearful for their jobs.
