Gazprom Playing Games with Europe's Gas Supply Again
Russian energy company Gazprom has resumed normal gas supply to Belarus after it stated that the $200 million debt was almost paid off. The energy giant Gazprom had reduced the supply of gas by 60 percent in wake of the dispute.
The four day old supply cuts imposed by the company has undermined Russia's reputation as a reliable energy supplier. With Belarus threatening to block Russian gas supplies to Europe on Thursday, the European Union will be doubtful about the wisdom of relying on Russia for the bloc's energy needs.
Lithuanians saw their gas supply plunge by 40 % at one point during the course of the dispute. The European Union Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger described the situation as an attack on the whole EU.
The situation flared up over a trivial payment issue but according to strategists there was more to it than meets the eye. Lukashenko has irritated Moscow with his independent approach as the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin fights for control over post-Soviet territory.
Whatever the result of altercation Russia's reputation did take a beating.
