Members of the Kimberely Process are having a tough time with Zimbabwe. The ban on sales from Zimbabwe’s Marange diamond field has brought a major crisis to the global diamond monitoring group. Now exports from the Marange field have been allowed by the Kimberly members but there are divided opinions on how to monitor the overseas sales.

Vale of Brazil, the second-largest mining company in the world, sent an iron ore ship heading for China to Italy to supply Ilva instead of going to Dalian in China. The company said that there was no political or technical problem but the re-routing was undertaken to finalize talks on future port deals in China.

French Nuclear Energy company Areva has expressed plans to mine for uranium in an area called Koongarra in the Northern Territory of Australia. However the small area has been donated by the traditional owner Jeffrey Lee to the Commonwealth and the Federal Government wants to include it in the world hertitage listed Kakadu National Park.

Denison Mines Corporation sent the White Canyon Uranium Company a compulsory acquisition notice. Denison Mines already holds 97% of Perth based White Canyon and will acquire the remaining 3% shortly.
Rio Tinto has increased its stake in Ivanhoe to 55.1 million shares making it the owner of 46.5% of the company.
Having discovered a high grade vein system at its Mexican mine Gold Resource Corporation has decided to proceed with the El Rey mine underground exploration program. It will also be advancing its new underground exploration program at the Alta Gracia property. The company made a statement to this effect on Tuesday.
