Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) was affected by the recent bad weather in Australia as heavy rains saw it shipping 11.5 % less iron ore in the March quarter this year as compared to the previous year.

Century Mining Corporation has restarted its milling operation at the San Juan gold mine in Peru. Ggold milling had been suspended two weeks ago after the suspension order was given by the Peruvian Government. The suspension had been ordered as the government was concerned about the permission and construction of the tailings areas for the company.
Lundin Mining is not in favour of the hostile takeover bid from Equinox Minerals. The unsolicited Canadian $4.7 billion bid should be rejected by shareholders if the board of director’s recommendation is to count. Equinox Minerals itself has refused a $6.3 billion offer from China’s Minmetals Resources calling it opportunistic.
The approval of the $800 million phosphate mine in the outback of Queensland will put pressure on housing in the area. The phosphate mining lease approved by the state government will allow Legend international Holdings to operate two of its mineral reserves in the north of Mount Isa.

The federal government is going to push free trade in an attempt to improve the economic condition of Australian states that have not benefited by the mining boom. Prime Minister Julia Gillard is going to give a thrust to a new round of trade liberalization to help non-mining states that are struggling to keep pace with the resources boom.

Moly Mines have secured finances for developing the Spinfex Ridge molybdenum copper mine. Hanlong Mining, the majority shareholder in the project, has managed to obtain a $500 million financing facility from the China Development Bank for the project located in Western Australia.
The University of Queensland has awarded an internal fellowship scheme to foster research excellence in applications that deal with water technology issues in the mining industry. It is one of 15 successful applications for the award given to Vice-Chancellor's Senior Research Fellowships.

The Ranger uranium mine has been mining on a lease inside the Kakadu National Park for 30 years. Now following the Japanese Fukushima nuclear fiasco the traditional land owners say that they do not want uranium mining to continue on their land. The Mirarr people want the Jabiluka uranium deposit to not be mined and included into the national park protection area.
