The strike at San Cristobal the largest silver mine in Bolivia ended on Monday. The mine is located in the Potosi mineral rich area in south western Bolivia. The mine is run by the Sumitomo Corporation.

Kinross Gold Corporation hopes to buy a 25% stake in the Chukotka Mining and Geological Company for $350 million. This will give it full ownership of the Russian mining company and accord it full control of the Kupol gold mine in east Russia. The stake is currently owned by the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Mount Gibson Iron Ltd has ended its agreement with Shougang Concord International Enterprises. The agreement included the sale of 80% of its mine production to the Chinese steel manufacturing company from the Extension Hill mine. The company did not give any specific reason for the termination of the agreement.
Abra Mining Ltd shares rose by more than 20% after the company recommended the takeover offer of Hunan Nonferrous Metals Corporation. The Chinese company currently is a majority stockholder of Abra Mining holding 74% shares of the company.

Tony Abbott the Federal Opposition leader said that he would not support a moratorium on coal seam gas exploration in New South Wales till he was persuaded that miners were playing fast and loose with the environment. This was in response to the indigenous group that is gearing up for a fight against coal seam gas in the state.

Teck Resources Limited has reached a tentative agreement with union negotiators to end a two month strike in the Elkview metallurgical coal mine. Located in western Canada the Teck Resources owned mine is the largest of the six coal mines owned by the company.
Hong Kong-based base metals company Minmetals Resources (HKSE:1208) hopes to make a takeover bid for Equinox Minerals, an international mining company that is dual listed in Canada and Australia. The bid from the Chinese company may put the target’s hope to acquire Ludin Mining into jeopardy.

Coal in northeast British Columbia has attracted the attention of a consortium of Chinese investors. The Chinese group hopes to develop three underground coal mines in the area to help secure the key raw material it needs for its steel industry. The ambitious project would cost U.S.$1 billion and create about 6,000 jobs directly and indirectly associated with the mines.
