The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is to begin an action of 621 parcels of land for mineral leases on Thursday. This is in spite of landowner concerns regarding the issue. The opponents of the process feel that the state is allowing too much prospecting too fast and there may be severe repercussions.

The ban on sand mining in non-coastal regulatory zone areas of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have been lifted for two years. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has announced that the ban was temporarily lifted on Monday. The lifting of the ban will bring relief to builders in the Indian state of Maharashtra who have been facing a shortfall of sand for construction purposes.

In a bid to diversify and grow Barrick Gold has stepped into the copper market by masterminding a $7.14 billion aquisition of Equinox Minerals. In a move that shook up the mining industry the Canadian miner said that it was planning to expand its potential gold and copper reserves by buying Equinox Minerals on Tuesday. This puts rest to Minmetals’s takeover bid for the company which was of $7.3 billion value.
Wayne Swan the Australian Treasurer said in his weekly economic note that the Budget would be focusing on spending cuts. He said that the government would be required to cut down on expenses as the current mining boom will place inflationary pressures on the economy.

Rio Tinto finally managed to get its hands on Riversdale Mining after Brazil’s CSN gave up its stake to them. On Wednesday Companhia Siderurgica Nacional or CSN announced that it had sold its 20% holding of Riversdale Mining to Rio Tinto because the price was right.
