The deadline for the possible takeover of Riversdale Mining by Rio Tinto is up and the fate of the $4 billion transaction is sealed as Rio fell short of the 50% votes that were needed to push the deal through.
Shares in Australian based minerals exploration company Signature Metals (ASX : SBL) have gone up after the company announced that mining at the Konogo gold project in Ghana’s Ashanti gold belt has commenced.

Proving that mining operations can also be fuelled by green energy is the Mt. Cattlin lithium mine site. The Western Australia mine owned by Galaxy Resources has received the Energy and Distribution Award in Perth this week for its considerable achievement. The award was presented by the Sustainable Energy Association of Australia.
Lynas Corporation has agreed to sublease areas within its mining lease to Forge Resources. The deal will involve granting Forge Resources the rare earth deposits located within the Mount Weld area, located 35 kilometres south of Laverton, Western Australia.

At the Chambishi Copper Smelter in Zambia about 600 workers have stopped work as they demand higher wages. The joint venture is owned by China Nonferrous Metals Corporation and Yunnan Copper Industry and is situated about 370 km north of Lusaka.

The Newmont Mining Corporation board of directors have announced the approval of funds for the Akyem gold project in Ghana. The project has been cleared by the board to the fourth stage in its four gate project review process that will now be somewhat similar to the bankable feasibility approval.
Leighton Contractors, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Leighton Holdings Group, has won two new gold mining contracts, one in Western Australia and the other in the Northern Territory. The combined worth of these mining contracts is $317 million. Shares in the company shot up after the announcement last week.

The Queensland Resources Council wants the state to ease up and allow more mining exploration. The chief of the Queensland Resources Council Michael Roche said that the horrible environment for mining exploration in the state is getting even worse. The state’s policy settings are going from bad to worse as the Labor government tries to please the Greens by going back on its promises to the mining community.

Ironclad Mining is making great progress on developing the Wilcherry Hill Iron Ore Project in South Australia. There has been an estimated 69.3 million tonnes of near surface crystalline magnetite ore discovered at Wilcherry Hill. Of this 48 million tonnes is indicated and 21 million tonnes is inferred.

President Obama seems to be sending out mixed signals as far as fuels and energy generation go. While the Obama administration has been saying that it is tough on dirty fuels the claim falls flat when you hear that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar yesterday announced an enormous expansion in coal-mining in the U.S. About 7,590 million tons of coal currently in federal land in Wyoming will soon be leased to mining companies.
