The Virginia Energy Independence Alliance is a pro-energy group which is advocating uranium mining benefits in Virginia. The pro-uranium group has launched an advertising campaign which includes television adverts in Central and Southside Virginia to highlight the possible benefits of uranium mining in the state.

Peabody Energy and ArcelorMittal have been told by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition that the EU Merger Regulation does not apply to PEAMCoal’s $15.50 share offer for Macarthur Coal.

Harmony Gold Mining Company has settled a claim with the lead plaintiff of a group that claimed the company overstated earnings in 2007. The Johannesburg based Harmony Gold is the third largest producer of gold in Africa and the fifth largest producer of the precious metal in the world.

BHP Billiton is to acquire HWE Mining from Leighton Holdings, allowing the mining giant to switch to an owner-operater model at its iron ore mining operations in the Pilbara region. The deal will see Leighton Holdings richer by $735 million. HWE Mining had provided close to 70% of operations on behalf of BHP Billiton on contractual basis.
